10 Tips to Help Prepare Your Child for a Week Without Their Device

At Nature Moves, one of the things we’re most proud of is that our camps are completely device-free. That’s right—no phones, tablets, gaming consoles, or screens. Why? Because we believe in helping kids reconnect with themselves, with others, and with nature—without distractions.

But we also know that for many kids (and let’s be honest, many adults too!), the idea of going without a device for a whole week can feel a little… overwhelming.

The good news? With a little preparation, your child can not only survive a week without their device—they can thrive. Here's how to help them get ready:

1. Talk About It Early

Start the conversation well before camp begins. Let your child know that Nature Moves is device-free on purpose—not as a punishment, but as a way to help them experience something new.

2. Focus on the Positives

Highlight the exciting parts of camp: campfires, outdoor adventures, new friends, games, animals, art, nature walks… the list goes on! Get your child excited about what they will be doing—not what they’ll be missing.

3. Practice Short Device Breaks at Home

In the weeks leading up to camp, start building screen-free moments into your child’s daily routine. This helps reset their brain and gives them confidence that they can function without a screen.

4. Create a Screen-Free Kit

Put together a “camp fun pack” with things like a journal, colouring book, puzzle, sketch pad, or small craft kit. These familiar items give your child something comforting to reach for during downtime.

5. Talk About FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

It’s normal for kids to feel like they’re missing out if they’re not online. Reassure them that social media will still be there when they get back—and remind them they’ll be creating memories others will be jealous of!

6. Share Your Own Device Break Story

If you’ve ever gone off-grid or taken a screen break yourself, share what it was like. Kids are more likely to try something if they see that you’ve done it too.

7. Celebrate Independence

Frame the week as a big milestone: “This is your chance to try something not everyone is brave enough to do.” Kids love rising to a challenge when they feel supported.

8. Practice Social Skills

Without screens, there’s more space for connection. Encourage your child to practice starting conversations, making eye contact, or introducing themselves. Role-playing helps!

9. Remind Them It’s Not Forever

One week might feel like forever to a kid who’s used to daily screen time. Let them know it’s just a short break—and they’ll have so much to share with you when they return.

10. Trust the Process

Even if they’re unsure at first, most campers quickly forget about their devices once camp begins. We've seen it time and time again: nervous faces on day one, glowing smiles by the end of the week.
